    It’s easy to create a free account at Geneanet, the #1 genealogy site in France and Europe’s biggest community of genealogists! No payment or bankcard information is required, and you may use a free account for as long as you wish.

    On the Geneanet homepage, click on the red “Sign In” button to the upper right. Next, enter your name and e-mail, then enter a username (screen name) and password. Be aware that a username cannot be changed for an account, so be sure to choose a name you like! Note that a username will be in all lowercase letters and cannot contain a space. For security reasons, avoid a username with personal information.

    Take a moment to read our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click on the red “Create account” button.

    Getting the most out of Geneanet

    We encourage you to upload a GEDCOM file if you already have a family tree elsewhere (online or on your computer), as you will get more out of Geneanet with a tree. With a free account, you may build a tree of unlimited size and you get 1 Gb of storage for photos and documents for your tree. Be aware that trees at Geneanet are public by default, while living persons are masked; for more information, read our page “Understanding and configuring privacy settings at Geneanet”.

    After becoming acquainted with Geneanet, we hope you will consider becoming a Premium member to benefit from advanced search, automatic e-mail alerts about ancestors, automatic tree matching, 1-click backup restore, the Genealogy Library of books and newspapers, personalized support, 10 Gb document storage, and other features at a very affordable price.

    At Geneanet, we believe genealogy is about sharing. Geneanet volunteers upload indexes, archival register images, grave photos, postcards, and more. And Geneanet members also transcribe documents uploaded by others, and participate in collaborative family tree projects. Member contributions are always free for all; we hope you will consider contributing too!

    2. How to login to Geneanet?

    To connect to Geneanet, click on Sign In at the upper right after creating your account. Next, enter your username (or your e-mail) and your password.

    If you check the tickbox for “Keep me logged in”, a cookie (a small computer file storing information about a site) will remember you so you don’t have to log in every time. Note that a cookie is specific to a browser, so if you switch browsers or devices, you will need to login again. Note also that some browsers, operating systems, and password manager applications you may have on your computer or device will remember a password for you as an option. These tools are specific to your computer and are not the same as Geneanet’s cookie system.

    3. Common login issues and how to fix them

    If you can’t login to Geneanet and you no longer use the e-mail address associated to your account, you can send us a message at cgu[at]geneanet.org indicating the following information:

    • First name and family name;
    • User name;
    • Complete postal address;
    • Date and place of birth;
    • Your former and current e-mail addresses.

    With this information, we will be able to locate your account and restore your access.

    • If you have forgotten your password, you can easily create a new one as long as you use the same e-mail associated with the account. Just click on “Forgot password?” and follow the instructions, checking your e-mail for a special login link. If you don’t see the mail, check it has not been routed to your spam folder.
    • If your browser makes you login every time even if you have ticked the “Keep me logged in” box, it is likely a cookie issue. You will just need to activate cookies on your browser. Click on the icon of your usual browser below to learn about that browser’s cookies. Alternatively, you can just access Geneanet with a different browser.

    • Is your password not working? Check first that you don’t have caps lock activated on your keyboard. Click the eye symbol to the right of the password field to see the password as you type it.
    • Have you entered the correct username or your e-mail address associated with your account? If you have forgotten your username, you can find it in any e-mails we have previously sent you.
    • If you use passwords stored automatically by your browser, operating system, or a password manager application, perhaps your system has stored an old password for Geneanet. It’s always possible for you to login with your latest password and update the system you use.
    • E-mail address changed? Login to your account and go to your account profile (click on your name at the upper right), you can change it there.
    • If you are connected to Geneanet and want to change your password, you can do so in the tab Password of your Personal Profile. On this last page, you can also change your email address.

    4. How to log out from Geneanet?
