Defensive end Mitchell Loewen, a Lahainaluna High School graduate, made the New Orleans Saints roster when the team completed its mandatory cuts to the NFL regular-season limit of 53 on Saturday.
“It feels great, but I just want to thank everyone who’s got me to this place, helped me grow up — all my coaches, friends, family, people in my church back home, Kumulani Chapel,” Loewen said. “It’s been a ride. This is what I’ve worked for since I was a little kid and now it’s finally here. I’m going to keep working to make sure I stay here.”
The Arizona Cardinals cut Pasoni Tasini, the only other player from Maui who entered Saturday still on a training-camp roster.
Loewen had seven tackles, including 1 1/2 sacks, in the Saints’ four preseason games, and has played frequently on special teams.
“Special teams, you’ve got to show them what you can do,” he said. “You’ve got to play ball all around and they’ve got to be able to see what you can do. The motto of the league: The more you can do, the longer you stay.”
Loewen signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent last year, but spent 2016 on injured reserve with a foot injury.
New Orleans will open its 2017 regular-season schedule on Sept. 11 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.
Tasini suffered a knee injury in a preseason game Thursday that coach Bruce Arians said did not appear serious.
Tasini, who had five tackles in the preseason, could be a practice-squad candidate — those rosters can be set today.
