For the second year in a row, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa will honor  its seven African Black-Footed Penguins on Penguin Awareness Day.

The celebration and penguin feeding will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Hyatt  Atrium Lobby at the penguin habitat. Learn more about these captivating creatures, such as Oreo, the eldest of the bunch at 32 years old, and the younger thirsty twin penguins Mai and Tai.

Following the penguin feeding, you may partake in penguin cookie decorating, take pictures with the resort’s penguin mascot, capture a moment at the photo booth and watch as the seven playful penguins eat, swim and waddle around. Penguin lovers can join the fun by following on social media and sharing their penguin photos at #PenguinInParadise.

Hyatt Regency Maui is the only resort in the Hawaiian Islands with an on-site penguin habitat. These adorable African-Blacked Footed Penguins are listed as endangered but they have successfully reproduced and reared six of the seven current penguins right on property.

Part of Hyatt Maui’s wildlife program, the penguins are joined by exotic cranes, swans, flamingos and parrots. Daily penguin feedings take place at 9:30 a.m. Wildlife Tours take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Hyatt Maui also welcomes new General Manager Fred Findlen, who most recently was in the same position at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa & Casino along with Puerto Rico, Key West and many other top resort locations.

“My previous positions have taken me across the United States and back, and I am honored to continue working with the Hyatt Hotels and Resorts on one of the best islands in the world at a leading Hyatt resort,” explains Findlen.

Friday and Jan. 27, the resort’s Japengo will present a three-course Tastemakers food and beer experience. For more information, call 661-1234.
